Spread betting – the week ahead in forex, equities, indices and commodities

A mix of macroeconomic and earnings to look forward to this week. First up, preliminary GDP data from Japan for the second quarter will offer some more clues about how much progress has been made since the Bank of Japan cut rates into negative territory. Japan’s economy expanded at an annualised rate of 1.7% in the first quarter, but the Japanese cabinet office has cut its growth forecast for the year from 1.7% to 0.9%.

Tuesday sees minutes from the latest Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) meeting. With speculation mounting that the central bank will cut again and even launch “unconventional” easing, these minutes will be closely watched. On the same day, UK inflation for July will be examined for any signs that the post-Brexit slump in sterling has fed through to higher prices.

Come Wednesday the US will be back in focus with the minutes from the last Federal Reserve meeting due to be released. After two months of standout job numbers, investors will want to see any signals that the Fed is more inclined to raise interest rates this year.

On the earnings front, Cisco and HP represent tech stocks, while retailers Home Depot, Target and Gap are among the other big US releases. It’s quieter in Europe but there are still a few FTSE firms to watch.
