General Internet Explorer troubleshooting

A quick fix for many technical problems is to clear the cache of temporary internet files stored by your PC. In order to do this follow the steps below.

With a single Internet Explorer window open, perform the following:

  1. From the menu at the top of the screen, select 'Tools > Internet Options'
  2. Click on 'Delete Cookies' and click 'OK' in the pop-up box that says 'Delete all cookies in the Temporary Internet Files Folder'.
  3. Click on 'Delete Files'. Check the box that says 'Delete all offline content' and click OK in the pop-up box.
  4. Select the 'Privacy' tab and ensure that the level is set to either 'Medium', 'Low' or 'Accept All Cookies' as opposed to 'Custom Level' - this can be done by clicking the 'Default' button. Alternatively, if you do not wish to change your current cookie settings, you can enable cookies specifically for the ETX Capital website by doing the following: in the Web Sites section, click the 'Edit' button, type www.etxcapital.co.uk into the address field and then select 'Allow' and click 'Ok'. Click 'Apply' to save all changes under the 'Privacy' tab.
  5. Select the 'Security' tab and ensure that the security level for the Internet zone is set to medium, which can be done by clicking the 'Default Level' button on the lower right of the panel. Click 'Apply'.
  6. Finally select the 'General' tab then click 'OK' to close the 'Internet Options' window. Close all browser windows and any other java related programs before opening Internet Explorer again and navigating back to the ETX Capital website.

Company proxy servers/firewalls

If you are unable to access the ETX Capital website at all, you may find that your IT department has blocking in place on their firewall/proxy server to prevent access to certain sites. You will need to get them to add the ETX Capital website to their list of sites that are allowed to pass through the firewall/proxy server.

If you are using Sun Microsystems Java you may need to add your proxy information to the (Sun) Java Plug-in Control Panel, which can be accessed through Windows Control Panel. For detailed instructions visit the Sun Java site.

Personal firewalls

If properly configured, personal firewalls will not be a problem and we strongly suggest that you have some form of firewall protection in place before you connect to the internet. Various types of firewall software are available free for personal use at www.download.com. However, firewalls can be set to block Java applets, JavaScript and cookies, amongst other things, which will cause problems when accessing the ETX Capital website. If you are experiencing problems with the ETX Capital website, please check the configuration of your firewall, including the built-in Windows XP firewall.

Ad blocking software

There can be issues with ad-blocking software, which may block certain JavaScript functions. We do however strongly suggest that you have some form of ad-blocking software in place. Various free ad blocking software products are available free for personal use at www.download.com. Please note: ETX Capital does not currently and will not in the future have any embedded adware or spyware.

Use ETX Capital in secure mode

If you wish to log in via a secure https page rather than a standard http page, simply open a new homepage using https://www.etxcapital.co.uk and log in as normal. All pages on the site will then be https until you log in via a standard http page.

The standard ETX Capital site uses 128 bit encryption on pages with sensitive date such as credit/debit card entry pages.
